Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian city; the capital city is Argostoli. Lixouri is the island’s second main settlement which accounts for two thirds of the prefectures population.
The island has two mountains, the highest being Mount Ainos where an area of recognised natural beauty can be found as well as the Paliki mountains to the northwest. Agriculture is the main occupation of the island, and in particular winemaking.
There are 5 ports on the island one of them,Sami has excellent links to Patras on the mainland and to the nearby island of Ithaca. Poros, another as ferry routes to Kyllini, also on the mainland and Argostoli has regular ferries to Zante.
The island is well renowned for its local turtle population, which nest at Kaminia beach and are protected by the Sea Turtle Protection Society. It has a rich history dating back to ancient times and there have been great archaeological finds which can be trace back to 40000 BC and to the Paleolithic era. The most important era for the island is without doubt the Mycenean era between 1500-1100BC, and it has to be noted that these finds are exhibited in the archaeological museum in Argostoli. There have also been other Roman finds dating back to 2nd century BC.
Since then the island has gone through several other eras: the Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, French and British. It was united with Greece in 1864. Sadly during the Second World War and during the Civil War which ensued it witnessed some of the most bloodiest battles.
It has been popularised in film through Captain Corelli’s mandolin which made it even more widely known and tourists flood from all over Europe to the island to enjoy the islands’ natural beauty and at the same time sample the culture offered. In addition to areas of natural beauty there are several museums in the Argostoli and Lixouri as well as several monasteries.
It is a verdant island and offers areas of natural beauty, golden sand beaches and spectacular caves. It has to be noted that Myros, the most famous of beaches, has been ranked 5th worldwide for their beauty and is a major tourist attraction. Fishing is also very common throughout the island and the harbours of Argostoli and Lixouri are main fishing centres.
